MEET THE CAPTAIN

Five Questions About Leadership and Legacies

1. What aspect of college dodgeball made you want to captain an NCDA team?
The main reason that I wanted to become a captain for Delta's Dodgeball team was because if I hadn't Delta might not have a team this year. I felt it was my duty to step up and keep Delta's team going. I plan on becoming a coach for high school sports, and so what better way to gain experience than helping coach/manage a collegiate club. I first heard about Delta Dodgeball as a junior in high school and have been trying to do as much as I could for Delta.

2. What are the main principles that you emphasize to your team?
Out of all our principles, the number one principle for us this season is dedication. Delta is only a two year junior college and finding and keeping players is a very hard thing to do. Other important principles that are being empasized at Delta this season are teamwork and honesty. Teamwork is a vital thing for us at Delta, because our team is always going to be one of the smallest in the NCDA and this year we will be one of the youngest, as well. Honesty seems to be a new concept for dodgeball at Delta College. Delta has had a bad history about close plays and this year we will be trying to change that bad reputation that we currently have. Before every game however, the last word that will be said will be 'fun', as in, "Have fun!" We are young and have a lot of new players, so although winning is good, we need to remember to have fun.

3. How do you want your team to remember you after your captaincy is over?
After my captaincy ends at Delta College, I would like other players, as well as the new players coming in, to use myself and my co-captain, Todd Geyer, as examples of how to work together for the common good of the team and the league. I hope the team looks at and remembers the poise and leadership I showed, as well as my honesty and acceptance toward other players and teams.

4. What characteristics will you look for in your successor?
For my successor, I will be looking for someone who will get the job done and done right. They will have to show me they can be a leader on and off the court and show me that they know how to manage any kind of team, whether it be a good team or a bad team, a smart team or a useless one. They will have to be able to understand that things will not always go as planned and they will need to know how to deal with the problems as they come up.

5. As a captain, what's your biggest priority for the league going forward?
I enjoy the fact that the young child's school yard game of dodgeball, quite possibly could become the next big nation sensation at the college athletic level. I will try to bring in enough people to get involved from all aspects of Delta College's campus and the surrounding area to keep Delta's program from fading away and to hopefully produce more dodgeball leaders to help the NCDA sweep through colleges across the country. I am also thinking about implementing managerial duties at Delta College. Although the manager would not play or possibly even go to Delta anymore. They could manage the team's game schedule, the team's money, and the team's practices as well.
