Five Questions About Leadership and Legacies
1. What aspect of college dodgeball made you want to captain an NCDA team?
Initially I wanted to be an Assistant Captain because my grasp of the game is good enough to show new guys how to play. But when I heard that a position for captain was opening up I figured it was my duty as one of the veterans with two years left to take this position in order for a smooth transition of dodgeball generations.
2. What are the main principles that you emphasize to your team?
Don't cheat, ever. Honesty in dodgeball is key because refs have a hard time calling everyone out. When people cheat it ruins the game, people get angry and then someone can get hurt. My other main principle is just to have fun. If dodgeball is no fun why even play? I want every member of my dodgeball squad to love the game.
3. How do you want your team to remember you after your captaincy is over?
I hope that they remember me for my ability to transition power of the older dodgeball generation to the younger generation. We are losing a lot of players this year and next year, so I hope they remember me for making sure our team stays together and is just as good as it used to be.
4. What characteristics will you look for in your successor?
Someone that will be able to help new players develop into good dodgeball players, someone that can command the court, and someone that is cool headed so they can dispute calls made by refs without being disrespectful.
5. As a captain, what's your biggest priority for the league going forward?
I want to maintain good relations with other teams so we can respectuflly discuss key dodgeball points. Also, I would gladly help new teams in the league of they had any questions about how to be successful in games, rules, or how to start a team. As a captain it is important to know these things in order to have an efficient team.
