Five Questions About Leadership and Legacies
1. What aspect of college dodgeball made you want to captain an NCDA team?
Who wouldn't want to be a captain of one of the best classic schoolyard sports!?! But, really, the whole notion that dodgeball as a sport instead of a recreational activity, as well as the fact that there was more to it than just throwing a ball is incentive enough to head up a collegiate team. Dodgeball really is more than just throwing a ball and strategy is key. After playing for a few years I felt that I had a good grasp of what goes in to making a winning team, so I decided to give it a go as the captain of the UK Club Dodgeball team.
2. What are the main principles that you emphasize to your team?
I keep trying to get across to my team that it's not always about having the strongest throw or hitting the most guys, but rather that almost all games are won by the team that works to get the catches! Like I said before, strategy is key and if you don't know how to take care of the ball and choose the best shots you're just going to fall short.
3. How do you want your team to remember you after your captaincy is over?
If I was to be remembered then I would want it to be on the basis that not all throws have to look pretty as long ad they hit your target. Also, maybe as the one who occasionally hits the guy in front of him while trying to curve the ball around. haha Always remember to watch your back when I'm throwing around you, you might be hit, however rare an occurrence it may be.
4. What characteristics will you look for in your successor?
Dedication! Every team needs to be lead by a person who is going to show up and care about what his team does. The dedication you show will be reflected in the type of team you have. Additionally, you have to enjoy what you do. I always look to have a good time and remember that it's just a game. Sure it's good to win, but if you can't just loosen up and have fun and not be serious 100% of the time then you shouldn't be the leader of a team.
5. As a captain, what's your biggest priority for the league going forward?
One of the main priorities that I have for the sport as a whole is promotion, getting more and more schools to set up club teams and play all around the country. I mean who doesn't want to go to a tournament in California!?!?!
